Equality & Equity

Equality & equity are key to building a regenerative, inclusive and collaborative world. Equality implies sameness. Equity refers to fairness and looks at whether the distribution of income (ie the relative amounts people receive as income) can be seen as `fair´: Should Business Executives receive a greater income than Teachers, for example? Why? This is indeed a very complex question.

There are many different examples of how this works in practice. Gender equity is the process of being fair to women and men, for example. Equity means we take steps to make the playing field more level, which then eventually leads to equality. Gender equality requires equal enjoyment by women and men of socially-valued goods, opportunities, resources and rewards.

To develop organizations, economies and societies that offer equal opportunity and social justice underpinned by fair and free markets, we must also build on the good work being done in reducing inequalities between and among countries. The international community has made significant strides towards lifting people out of poverty, but there is still a great deal to be done.
